Barnum Rail Trail Marathon and Half Marathon

It has been super to put on a race on the Barnum Rail Trail these past five years (2014-2018). If you have never been to the trail I recommend that you visit sometime. However, it is time to check out another race venue in WV. Altis Endurance Sports is excited about conducting the inaugural Eastern Panhandle Marathon and Half Marathon in Martinsburg, WV on Monday September 30, 2019. The 2019 Mid-Atlantic Marathon and Half Marathon Series will take place from September 28th-October 2nd. The events in the Series are the Cross County Trail Marathon and Half, the C&O Marathon and Half, the Eastern Panhandle Marathon and Half, the Hancock Marathon and Half, and the GAP Trestles Marathon and Half. In order, the series races take place in VA, DC, WV, MD, and PA. Run one, some, or all the Mid-Atlantic Marathon and Half Marathon Series races.

The fifth annual race is set for Saturday, September 29, 2018. Both the marathon and half marathon will start at 8:00AM. This event will take place in its entirety in West Virginia on the eastern bank of the Potomac River. The start/finish is located at 39.44199, -79.11420 down the road from the Barnum Whitewater Area. Direction links to the start/finish are provided below. If one uses maps.google.com, the start finish can be viewed on Barnum Road 1.4 miles past 530 Barnum Road Keyser, WV 26726. The Barnum Rail Trail Marathon and Half Marathon is the fourth race in the Mid-Atlantic Marathon and Half Marathon Series taking place from September 20-24, 2017 in the Cumberland, MD area.  The other events in the Series are the Brush Tunnel Marathon and Half, the GAP Marathon and Half, the GAP Trestles Marathon and Half, and the Hancock Marathon and Half. In order, the series races take place in MD, MD, PA, WV, and MD.

Registration

 

Please note that this event is a shirt optional race. Runners have the option to not receive the very nice soft cotton race shirt which reduces the below listed entry fees by $12.

$65 for the half marathon and $80 for the marathon to August 31st; $70 for the half marathon and $90 for the marathon from September 1st until the race. Online registration closes at 8:00PM eastern time Thursday September 27th.

ry=480-1Race morning packet pick-up will commence at 7:15 at the race start/finish. There is no prior-to-race day packet pickup.

Travel

Use this link to view the airports closest to Barnum, WV. According to the Travel Math link, the distances to Barnum, WV from major airports are: Dulles (IAD) – 125 miles; PIT  – 159 miles; DCA – 171 miles; BWI – 173 miles; Harrisburg (MDT) – 175 miles

The travel time to Barnum, WV from PIT, IAD, and BWI is essentially the same – just a few minutes less than three hours.

Hotels

The closest hotel is 39 minutes from the start/finish which is the Microtel Inn and Suites at 70 North Tornado Way Keyser, WV 26726. The Frostburg/Cumberland/La Vale, MD hotels are about 45 minutes from the start/finish. Runners conducting all five days of the Mid-Atlantic Marathon and Half Marathon Series should consider staying at one of the Frostburg/Cumberland/La Vale area hotels for the series.

Course Info

ry=480-3Entrants will start the race at the southern end of the trail at the park restrooms and head north (and down river) on the trail. At the 3.28 mile mark runners will turn around and head south (and up river) back to the start/finish. Half marathon entrants will run this out-and-back twice to complete a half marathon, and marathoners will complete this out-and-back four times to complete a marathon. Please note that the trail is also a rural gravel road for the southernmost mile of the course. The course is fairly flat. The half marathon has about 374 feet of gain and loss, and the marathon runners will experience about 748 feet of gain and loss on the course. A superb description of the trail can be found at http://www.traillink.com/trail/barnum-rail-trail.aspx.

Aid Stations

Half marathon runners will pass nine aid stations during their race, and the marathon runners will have 19 aid stations.

Aid stations for the half marathon are located at miles 1.0, 2.2, 4.4, 5.6, 6.6, 7.6, 8.8, 10.9 and 12.1

Restroom locations: 0, 6.6, and 13.1

Aid stations for the marathon are located at miles 1.0, 2.2, 4.4, 5.6, 6.6, 7.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.1, 13.1, 14.1, 15.3, 17.5, 18.7, 19.7, 20.7, 21.9, 24.0, and 25.2

Restroom locations: 0, 6.6, 13.1, 19.7, and 26.2

Cutoffs

Runners have eight hours to complete their respective race.

Refunds/Transfers/Miscellaneous

As is the case with most races, there will be no refunds of entry fees to entrants. Transfers of race bibs from one runner to another is also not allowed. This event is limited to 200 entrants. There will not be a waiting list if the race fills.
